Regional Accountant – Kentucky and Tennessee Division

Job Summary

Plans, implements, and administers the day-to-day operations of the Great Plains Accounting Program for assigned regions by using a functionalized double-entry accounting package; provides overall supervision and review of accounting records, ledgers, and statements for accuracy and completeness; maintains, interprets, and ensures the integrity of the chart of accounts, journals, fiscal closing statements, bank accounts, general ledger, asset management, and depreciation, etc. for the assigned region; serves as liaison and technical support between the set local units and Divisional Headquarters.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the practices and procedures of basic accounting and bookkeeping. Knowledge of Excel, Word, Great Plains Accounting Program, and other accounting software. Knowledge of general office practices and procedures. Ability to evaluate the organization’s accounting and financial functions, respond to deficiencies by identifying and implementing appropriate corrective actions, and develop budgets. Ability to effectively assess the quality of work performed by local accounting staff and to ensure compliance with established procedures, accepted practices, and quality standards. Ability to process, analyze and resolve routine accounting transactions and reporting by accepted accounting principles. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing effectively and professionally. Ability to develop and maintain an effective and professional working relationship with all Salvation Army officers and employees. Ability to keypunch information into a computer. Ability to sort and file documents alphabetically and numerically. Ability to perform routine and complex mathematical computations repeatedly, rapidly, and accurately. Ability to operate various general office equipment including a telephone, computer, fax machine, and adding machine. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously without becoming frustrated or disorganized. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with answering phones or speaking with employees/officers needing assistance. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of financial records Knowledge of basic accounting and bookkeeping practices and procedures.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or G.E.D. required; associate degree from a technical or vocational school supplemented by accounting or bookkeeping training preferred—two years of progressively responsible experience performing double entry. Computerized accounting work with Great Plains accounting experience preferred or any equivalent combination of formal education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Ability to meet attendance requirements. Duties are usually performed seated; sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.  Work requires the ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull light (less than 25 lbs.) materials, supplies, and equipment.  Light mobility: duties are usually performed by a combination of standing, walking, and primarily sitting.
