The Salvation Army in Athens, Georgia, celebrated 100 years of service to the community with a kickoff awareness luncheon at the Classic that drew 430 guests.

The keynote speaker, David Greene, former quarterback for the University of Georgia and a former NFL player, gave an inspirational message on the work of The Salvation Army and its ministry to others.  He noted that The Salvation Army, well known for its Christmas services, is not only a charitable organization but a church.

Greene graduated from the University of Georgia in 2004, and went on to play for the Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts. He ended his collegiate career with 42 wins, setting the NCAA record for most victories by any quarterback.

The master of ceremonies for the luncheon was Barbara Dooley, wife of Vince Dooley, former head coach and athletic director at the University of Georgia.  Her Southern accent and bold love for the people of Athens showed in her opening remarks as she pointed out the people in the crowd who stood up to be recognized as recipients of The Salvation Army support in their lives.

With the support of sponsors Heyward Allen Toyota & Motor Company, Jackson EMC, Martin Management Investment, LP and many other generous sponsors, The Salvation Army Athens was able to make the event a huge success in raising awareness of all that The Salvation Army does for those in need.

Guests viewed a slide show of images captured throughout 1916-2016.  A 100 years of service video was shown during the program, spotlighting volunteers, board members, officers and recipients who shared about their love for The Salvation Army Athens.

Prior to the 100 Year Celebration Luncheon, The Salvation Army Athens held a Paint the Town Red event: a week-long event with local businesses throughout Athens who gave 10 percent of their day's proceeds back to The Salvation Army.  In total, nearly $3,000 was raised for Doing The Most Good through The Salvation Army Athens' programs and services.

On the last day of that event, Mayor Nancy Denson of Athens made a proclamation to The Salvation Army Athens and presented the Key to the City to the Army. In true Salvation Army form, staff and volunteers dressed in Doughnut Girl attire handed out doughnuts to passers-by.
