‘Ambassadors For Good Day' enjoys success in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi

The Salvation Army’s first “Ambassadors for Good Day” was held on Tuesday, Aug. 10 throughout Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. Ambassadors for Good Day is a one-day event designed to educate and engage the public regarding the work of The Salvation Army in local communities. Participating Salvation Army locations teamed up with local celebrity ambassadors to educate and inspire the public by showing them what the organization does and how to get involved.

Below are a few highlights from this year's event.

Birmingham, Alabama

Ambassadors (Danny Carr, Jefferson County District Attorney, Sheriff Mark Pettway, and Ron "Papa Jack" Jackson) served in three areas of The Salvation Army Center of Hope —Hope Clothing, The Marketplace, and Cafeteria. Each Ambassador served alongside volunteers as they organized clothing donations, packed food bags, and served hot meals to community members.

Ambassadors who were unable to attend (comedian Roy Wood, Jr., and WBRC Chief Meteorologist Wes Wyatt) recorded promotional video messages.

Coastal Alabama

WKRG Reporter/Meteorologist Caroline Carithers conducted interviews from multiple local Salvation Army locations throughout the day, including The Salvation Army Thrift Store, Family Haven shelter, and Red Shield Shelter/Dauphin Way Lodge.

Shreveport, Louisiana

Mayor Adrian Perkins and former NBA player Stromile Swift served hot dogs, chips, and water to shelter residents from a canteen on shelter grounds. They also provided a snow cone truck for a fun summer treat.

Columbus, Mississippi

Nora Miller, President of Mississippi University for Women, Police Chief Frederick Shelton, and Advisory Board Chairman Todd Davis served as local Ambassadors and distributed food and gift boxes to the community. The event highlighted the partnership with the local Walmart, which donates fresh meat and produce to the food pantry along with non-perishable food items.

Meridian, Mississippi

Jamal Roberts (gospel artist, radio host on The Praise Radio Show, and finalist on BET's show Sunday Best) served the evening meal at The Salvation Army.

Todd Tilghman (winner of The Voice Season 18 and co-author of "Every Little Win" with his wife, Brooke) created a video testimonial to show their support for The Salvation Army.

MS Gulf Coast

Miss Mississippi Volunteer, Rachel Shumaker, and The Salvation Army’s very own Planned Giving Director and gospel quartet singer, Buddy Graves, served as local Ambassadors. The event featured a Salvation Army canteen providing water and a large banner describing the event, which took place at a mock homeless camp to raise awareness that "need has no season."
