Back-To-School Shopping Spree

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) – A rare and much needed experience Monday for 30 underprivileged children. Target and the Salvation Army teamed up to take them on a back-to-school shopping spree.

Volunteers escorted the children through the Target store on I-55 north Monday.

Each child was given an $80 dollar Target gift card to cover their purchases.

With big smiles, each boy and girl carefully selected their items. They picked out news clothing, shoes, and any other items they needed for the school year, then tallied up the price tag at the checkout stands.

“We picked 60 children that are part of our social services program that come in throughout the year for help and so Target gave each of the children a gift card and they shopped with a volunteer to buy school clothes for the children,” said Jessie Chapman with the Salvation Army.

Thirty other children will get to go on their back-to-school shopping spree Tuesday at the Target store in Flowood.

In all, more than 50 Salvation Army volunteers were on hand to help the children pick out their school attire and supplies.
