A Christmas Stocking workshop was held during the summer months as members met to sew and decorate stockings to be filled with gifts and distributed through the Christmas Cheer Center.
This project was initiated by member Barbara Straw who is a wonderful seamstress and contributes her time and talent each year to see that every child on the Angel Tree list receives a beautiful keepsake stocking. Auxiliary members meet and lovingly decorate each stocking under the guidance of Barbara. The finished stockings are distributed to different groups in the community who will fill them with appropriate gifts and return them to The Salvation Army for distribution to the children whose families have applied for assistance.
Last year the Stocking Committee made over 800 stockings like the ones shown in the pictures. The Auxiliary not only gives their time and talent to this project but also supply all the materials at no cost to The Salvation Army. Auxiliary President, Aletha Peterson, describes this project as “their passion” and has been a favorite with all the members for many years.
The ladies in this Auxiliary stay busy year round assisting the Army not only at Christmas time but with other projects which include a community Thanksgiving luncheon, disaster assistance, preparing meals for the Senior Citizen’s program and Advisory Board meetings, volunteering at the Red Shield Youth Club, providing camperships and many other activities. Their major means of fund raising to support their monetary contributions to the Army is an Annual Fashion Show.
